The ELTU at Kuliyapitiya Premises of the Wayamba University evolved through the North Western Province Affiliated University College (NWP AUC) and the Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.
The very first appointment to teach English was made during the NWP AUC time when Mr. K.M. Dissanayake was appointed as the first Instructor of the ELTU on 10.03.1995, who was later attached to the Faculty of Applied Sciences of the then Wayamba Campus of the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka, established on 07.11.1996. Later he was appointed as a member of the UGC Inter-university Committee on Teaching English on 20.02.1998 and the ELTU was entrusted with the task of conducting the GELT (Pre-University General English Language Teaching) for the students selected from the North Western Province to the national universities of Sri Lanka until its abolition in 2003 by the UGC.
With the establishment of the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka on 01.10.1999, the ELTU was detached from the Faculty of Applied Sciences and brought under the purview of the Vice-Chancellor as a common academic support unit, extending its services to both Faculties located at Kuliyapitiya premises. The Unit recruited two permanent instructors in 2001 and another in 2005. All these instructors were later promoted to the post of lecturer after they obtained their postgraduate qualifications.
