Before becoming a single Department of the Wayamba University, Industrial Management came under the preview of the Department of Industrial Management & Computer Studies in the Faculty of Applied Sciences I of Wayamba Campus established under the Rajarata University. The Department of Industrial Management attempts to blend its output with the existing industry requirements by carrying out the necessary adjustments of the curriculum in a timely manner and encourages the students to involve in a variety of extra-curricular activities through interdisciplinary and outreach events.
Effective and efficient management in the industry is vital for enhancing productivity for the competitiveness of the nation. Therefore Industrial management plays a vital role to face the stringent competition in future in the midst of the rapid globalization. So that the Department of Industrial management prepare the graduates not only by providing with solid knowledge in industrial management, but also with the brilliant skills which are expecting by the industries as well as by the world while enriching the students in good attitudes as well.
To achieve the above objective, the department offers a number of course modules not only to gain the conceptual knowledge but also have hands on experience in all aspects of information system development with exposure to business problem analysis and problem solving through “Design & Development of Computer Based Project” and hands on managerial experiences through Industrial Training at manufacturing and service organizations. These provide students with the opportunity to relate the academic contents of the modules to practical applications.
On behalf of the Faculty, the Department organized the Applied Science, Business and Industrial Research Symposium (ASBIRES) since 2009 as an annual event. The ASBIRES provides a platform for the undergraduates to present their research findings in a recognized forum which would encourage them to engage in similar studies even in the future.
To establish a strong network among undergraduates, industry and the Department, the subject related Association of Industrial Management Science Students (AIMSS) was found in 2005. This helps improve the mutual understanding among the students of Industrial Management to enhance their theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of Industrial Management. AIMSS successfully organizes the activities such as conducting guest lectures, factory visits, journal publications, workshops, out-bound-training programs, internal and external competitions, seminar and conferences.
The graduates who are majoring Industrial Management mark almost l00% employability. Career opportunities mainly exist in manufacturing industries such as apparel, footwear, wood products, auto mobiles, medical products and service industries such as bank, education, insurance, health, transportation and public administration. At present, many of our graduates live in foreign countries for their career development and higher studies.
The Department of Industrial Management has gained its present success through the worthy support of its academic staff. The Department is composed of multi-disciplinary skillful and knowledgeable work force in different disciplines such as Information and Communication Technology, Management and Engineering. Also the academic staff members have obtained their postgraduate qualifications from internationally recognized universities in Australia, P. R. China, France, Thailand and New Zealand. Therefore, the Department of Industrial Management is proud of its service rendering an enormous service to the community in accordance with the well-accepted standards together with a young and very dynamic staff committed to conduct each and every aspect of the programs.
