A workshop on “Effective use of English Language in Scientific Writing and Publishing Research Work” was held for the B.Sc. (Agric.) final year students of the Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management on 26th October 2020. The aim of the workshop was to guide the students to write a research article based on the results of their ongoing research projects. The event was co-organized by the publication committee of the 19th Agricultural Research Symposium (AGRES).
Prof. Meththika Vithanage, Professor, Office of the Dean and Director, Ecosphere Resilience Research Centre, Faculty of Applied Sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was the resource person. This full day workshop has been conducted via zoom virtual platform at the prevailing Covid-19 situation of the country. The content includes; Language tips for scientific writing, the art and style of writing abstract, introduction, methodology, results & discussion, best way to write a literature review and how to avoid plagiarism, how to write reference easily & referencing styles with especial focus on Harvard system, electronic bibliographies and plagiarism prevention software. Students’ participation for the workshop was 100% and interactive as well, with number of inquiries and questions from their research projects.
The workshop was co-organized and funded by the English for Inquiry-based Experiential Learning (EIEL) program under Activity 5 of the AHEAD ELTA ELSE faculty development project.
